Why study Portuguese?
There are many reasons, but Portuguese is one of ten languages identified as most important for the UK’s future by the British Council’s Languages for the Future report.
Portuguese is not just spoken in Portugal, but in Brazil and several African nations including Mozambique and Angola.
Good news!! Portuguese is relatively easy for English speakers, and even easier for people who speak Spanish or French.
Why is it easy for English speakers?
Because despite of being considered an Anglo Saxon language, English has borrowed lots of vocabulary from other languages, especially French and Latin. So, as Portuguese is a Latin language as well, we can learn many words comparing English and Portuguese.
A good way to find out the similarities is verifing the suffixes in both languages. Suffix is a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word or root (i.e., a base form), serving to form a new word.
So you can learn Portuguese from English and be sure that there are many similarities in vocabulary in the languages.
This is a list of the most common suffixes in English and Portuguese together.
